A female fig wasp squeezes tightly inside the fruit to lay eggs, allowing males to grow and fertilize female eggs, and then die. The space that wasps squeeze through to gain access is so tiny that the wasps sometimes lose their antenna or wings to gain purchase. The male wasps never leave the fig.
